Texts, Healing Practices, Healing Bodies: A Workshop on Medicine and Buddhism

Dwinelle Hall

The prevention,
alleviation and cure of diseases or physical ills has been a central concern to
religious traditions across East Asia, as well as a major drive in the creation
and performance of ritual and devotional practices. These practices not only
coexisted with, but also integrated (if not complemented) medical ones. Figures
of healers, physicians and ritual specialist have at times competed and at time
overlapped; religious institutions have consolidated, supported and even
presided over the transmission of medical treatises and healing practices;
Buddhist monks have played a key role in the spread and circulation of medical
knowledge as well as in the introduction of new medical doctrines well beyond
national borders.

Against this context, the present workshop wishes to be a platform to discuss
the intersections of ritual and medical practices in Tibet, China and Japan
(with a broad focus on medieval/pre-modern periods), by addressing the
following points:

- How different conceptions of the body, and its place in the universe, inform
the notion sickness, impurity, disease and their treatments as well.

- How fluid are concepts of health and disease?

- How discourses on physical health, mental health and well-being have been
constructed, represented, performed

In bringing together experts on Chinese, Japanese and Tibetan religions and
medicine, the workshop wishes to attempt a multicultural approach to the
above-mentioned issues of health, disease and body.
