- CALL FOR PAPERS -

The International Society for the History of East Asian Science, Technology, and Medicine (ISHEASTM) will hold its Thirteenth International Conference at the University of Science and Technology of China, Hefei, Anhui, July 25-29, 2011. The central theme for the Thirteenth Conference will be “Science and Cultural Heritage”. In addition to providing a forum for the latest scholarship in the history of science, technology and medicine in East Asia as usual, the Organising Committee of the 2011 conference encourages the discussion on the exploration, protection, conservation and contemporary significance of the tangible and intangible heritage related to the development of science, technology and medicine in East Asia .

VENUE AND ACCOMMODATION
Due to the unexpected high price of the conference facilities in the hotel we have chosen in the Huangshan city, the Local Organising Committee (LOC) decided to change the conference venue back to Hefei, the home city of the University of Science and Technology of China, and to organise an after-meeting field trip to the Yellow Mountains and its peripheral areas.
The main venue of the conference will be in the Eastern Building , Daoxianglou Hotel (literally Rice-Fragrance Pavilion Hotel). The hotel is the state guesthouse of the Anhui province, located in a green and gardenlike area near the downtown of Hefei , about 1.7 kilo-meters from the Eastern and Western Campuses of the University of Science and Technology of China. Since its opening in 1956, the hotel has accommodated Mao Zedong, Deng Xiaoping, Jiang Zemin, Hu Jingtao and many other national and foreign leaders. In addition to a complete set of professional conference centre, it also provides high quality foods, rooms and facilities at economic rates.
The prices for different type of rooms are as follow.
(1) Standard room (double beds with television, internet and bathroom): 260 RMB/night per room, breakfast for registered participants;
(2) Business suite (a sitting room plus a bedroom with television, internet and bathroom): 580 RMB/night per suite, breakfast for registered participants;
(3) Standard room in the villa styled building (double beds with television, internet and bathroom): 700 RMB/night per room, breakfast for registered participants;
(4) Business suite (a sitting room plus a bedroom with television, internet and bathroom): 2100 RMB/night per suite, breakfast for registered participants.
Internet service in all rooms has to be opened at a cost of 20 RMB/day. Chinese website of the hotel can be found at http://www.dxlhotel.com.
The hotel also has a cafeteria for lunch and supper. The price is 90 RMB/person per meal.

IMPORTANT DATES
1 Nov 2010 The conference website will be open at http://ichsea.ustc.edu.cn/ and linked to the website of ISHEASTM http://isheastm.ihns.ac.cn/. Registration forms will be made available there as well as a full description of the conference accommodation options, cultural activities, and tentative schedule. Registration fees may be paid directly through the website with a credit card, by money order, or by check.
1 Dec 2010 - 1 Mar 2011 Early Bird Registration on website and submission of abstracts. Panel, paper, and poster board abstracts of 250 words should be sent via e-mail attachment to the LOC: ichsea@ustc.edu.cn.
1 February 2011 Deadline for applications for financial assistance (see below).
1 May 2011 Notification of acceptance of submissions. Abstracts cannot be accepted after this date.
15 May 2011 Publication of preliminary program.
1 Mar – 25 July 2011 Late Registration and on-site registrations add $20 for students, post-docs, retirees; $40 for all others to Early Bird Fees.

CONFERENCE FEES
Early-Bird Registration between 1 Nov 2010 and 1 Mar 2011:
Standard Rate US$260;
Concessionary Rate US$130, for graduate students, post-docs within 5 years of Phd and retirees;
Guest/Companion Rate US$100, for those accompanying someone paying the standard or concessionary rate;
Day Registration US$50, for one specific day only, two days maximum; Otherwise the weekly rate must be paid;
Registration after 1 Mar 2011, including On-Site Registration: An extra US$20 for students and US$40 for all others will be added to the Early Bird Fees.

Registration for the conference automatically confers membership of the society for four years except for weekly guest or day participants. Members of the society receive its journal East Asian Science, Technology, and Medicine. Fee also includes breakfasts, three banquets, tea breaks, a field trip, but does not include the after-conference tour to the Yellow Mountain Area.

Cancellation Policy:
All Cancellations must be received in writing and emailed to ichsea@ustc.edu.cn by 1 May 2011 for full refund. After May 1, a $75 cancellation fee will apply.

Funding:
The organizers will provide some local subsidies for the registration fees for students and participants whose financial circumstances would otherwise make it impossible for them to attend. Awards will be made on the basis of the quality of abstracts and a statement of financial need, which will be evaluated by a panel of committee members (travel expenses not included). All applications for awards should be emailed to Prof. SHI Yunli or Dr. LÜ Lingfeng at ichsea@ustc.edu.cn and must be received before 1st February 2011. Later applications will not be considered.
